US construction spending for June MoM -0.4% versus 0% expected

June 2025 U.S. Construction Spending Summary

Total Construction:
Construction spending declined 0.4% MoM to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $2.14 trillion in June. Compared to a year ago, spending was down 2.9% YoY. Year-to-date spending for the first half of 2025 is 2.2% lower than the same period in 2024.

Private Construction:
Spending fell 0.5% MoM to $1.62 trillion.

Residential: Down 0.7% to $883.1 billion.

Nonresidential: Down 0.3% to $738.8 billion.

Public Construction:
Spending edged up 0.1% MoM to $514.3 billion.

Educational: Up 0.4% to $112.7 billion.

Highway: Up 0.6% to $144.1 billion.

Bottom line: Overall construction activity softened in June, led by declines in private residential and nonresidential sectors, while public construction saw modest gains, especially in education and highway projects.
