Japan trade data, April 2025

Trade Balance Total -115.8bn JPY. This is a dreadful result, big deficit vs. big surplus forecast. Big falls in exports to almost everywhere (see below) and imports down not as much as expected.

expected +227.1bn, prior +559.4bn

Imports -2.2% y/y

expected -4.5%, prior +1.8%

Exports +2.0% y/y … hard to reconcile this with the big falls to almost everywhere

expected +2.0%, prior + 4.0%

All of the following are y/y for April:

Exports to Asia +6%
Exports to China -0.6%
Exports to EU -5.2%
Exports to U.S. -1.8%
